CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Two men suspected in a Southwest Side robbery allegedly caused a three-vehicle crash that injured seven people as they fled from police at a high speed on I-57 Thursday afternoon.
The accident happened during the onset of rush hour shortly after 1 pm near 159th Street and I-57, prompting a shut down that lasted more than three hours.
Police say the two suspects who caused the crash were trying to escape a robbery. Moments earlier they apparently barged into the Let's Get Poppin gourmet popcorn shop in Morgan Park.
After the robber, police spotted the suspects in the get away car and attempted a traffic stop, but the suspects never stopped. Instead, they merged onto the interstate causing the crash.
The accused robbers were also injured in the accident and reportedly taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where they remain under heavy guard.
Thursday night, investigators combed the popcorn shop turned crime scene, searching for clues and interviewing employees while the long time staple remained closed.
The family owned business plans to re-open on Friday.
