CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A reputed Chicago gang member who gunned down a west suburban teenager he believed had flirted with his girlfriend was sentenced Tuesday to 50 years in prison for the 2009 slaying, the Sun-Times is reporting.
After being slammed with a sentence that likely will keep him behind bars until he is 71 years old, Luis Villavicencio-Serna turned in the DuPage County courtroom and grinned at several Addison police officers who had investigated the killing.
Now 21, Villavicencio-Serna was convicted of murdering 18-year-old Armando Huerta Jr. in a May 16, 2009, drive-by shooting as Huerta stood outside his Addison apartment.
The shooting occurred after Huerta had called and texted the 16-year-old girl Villavicencio-Serna was dating, DuPage County prosecutors said during his trial earlier this year.
"He was old enough to pull the trigger, but not mature enough to place a temporary dispute in its proper perspective," Judge Daniel Guerin said as he sentenced the Chicago man. "Now, he's going to grow old in prison."
During the trial, Villavicencio-Serna's girlfriend and two other friends recanted their initial claims to police that they saw him carry out the deadly attack.
Prosecutors argued the three changed their testimony because they were reluctant to testify against Villavicencio-Serna because of their ties to him.
