Chicago cops increase patrols to fight spike in violence

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago's spike in violence over the weekend has the city's top cop on the offensive.

Police Supt. Garry McCarthy has a plan to stop the downtown mob attacks and curb gun violence in the neighborhoods.

He said officers will work overtime to help combat the downtown mob attacks and neighborhood gun violence.

He spoke at Union League Club downtown. He said the rate of violence in Chicago is not acceptable, he is and will remain accountable for what is going on in the city, and that snuffing out gun and gang violence is a process.

Chicago police are stepping up patrols to fight the recent surge in violence.

Cops will get overtime for working on their days off starting this weekend.

Several tourists were beaten and mugged by large groups of teens on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, there were more than 50 shootings and nine people killed during the hot weekend.

McCarthy said despite the rash in violence, Chicago's crime numbers are down.

It's unclear how many officers will be a part of the program, and they could be assigned anywhere in the city.

But a police union spokesman said it's likely that the extra cops will be downtown to protect tourists. He also said adding overtime is an old police plan that they're just now implementing.
