Girl nearly kidnapped at 79th Street bus station

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A community alert has been issued after someone tried to abduct a 12 year-old girl from a South Side bus stop.

She was nearly kidnapped from the 79th Street station on Friday, at about 8:45 a.m. Police said the girl was approached by a man in a black van at the busy commuter intersection.

Community activists are asking for the public's help Monday morning, to find the suspect.

Andrew Holmes handed out flyers to let area residents and commuters know to be alert for a predator. Police said the suspect drove up in a black van and called out to the girl. She ignored him but he exited the vehicle and tried to grab her arm.

He was scared off when another woman saw what was happening and got involved. That's when the man took off.

Police describe the would-be abductor as a man in his twenties.

Commuters were pretty alarmed to hear it happened. Activists hope the CTA cameras might have caught images of the van or the suspect.

Police urge parents not to let their kids walk alone. But if they have to, they should identify safe havens along the way: trusted neighbors, crossing guards, businesses to seek help.

Police said everyone should keep mobile devices stowed - and don't wear ear buds.
