CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
In this week's edition of Chat Room, Sun-Times editor Susanna Negovan and consultant Rochelle Trotter dish on shoes and schools.
First up, Kayne's new Air Yeezy sneakers hit the stores this week. People are paying upwards of four times the suggested retail price of $250, and waiting in line for days to purchase the shoes. Is this a sign that the economy is getting better? Would you wait in line to purchase shoes?
Rochelle said she has in fact waited in line to purchase non-necessities like an iPad 2 or the new iPhone 4S. So while she can't condemn the actions taken relative to those who want the Air Yeezy sneakers, her only wish is that the purchasers are NOT using funds that aren't disposable...so if they can afford to blow this kind of money then fine, but don't take from rent or food budgets to buy sneakers. Rochelle admitted to having a shoe closet full of "not necessary - expensive" shoes but said it always comes from disposable income.
Susanna agreed, stating that both she and Rochelle have actually been together on "shoe excursions." She completely understands the "must have addiction" that comes with certain shoes and only wishes that whomever purchases these shoes aren't held prisoner by them in terms of being fearful to wear them because of potential theft or damage to the shoe.
A kindergarten teacher in New York City banned the song "God Bless the USA" from graduation ceremonies- stating it is too "grown up" and "may offend other cultures." Her suggestion: "Baby" by Justin Bieber. Is this a good thing or not?
Susanna thinks it's simply ridiculous. This teacher thinks that "God Bless the USA" is too grown up, but a Justin Bieber song is not? Ok then, why not reach a happy medium and just suggest Miley Cyrus's song "Party in the USA" as a happy go between?
Rochelle agreed this is nuts, and stated much of the controversy seems to stem around the teacher's religion (Jehovah's Witness). She thinks the teacher still may not have approved if the title were "Jehovah Bless the USA." This teacher spends money, which has the "In God We Trust" message, so it clearly can't be an issue of the use of the word God.
Instead both Rochelle and Susanna think the teacher is missing the whole message of patriotism which is what the song really represents.
