IDOT looks to improve safety on Eisenhower Expressway

Posted: Updated:

Left-lane on-and-off ramps might soon be a thing of the past on the Eisenhower Expressway.

The Illinois Department of Transportation said it wants to move the ramps to the right to improve safety.

I-290 between Mannheim and Cicero has the highest crash rate of any part of the Chicago expressway system, and left-hand ramps have a 49 percent higher crash rate than right-hand ramps.

The changes are a part of a larger improvement project for the Ike, though its timeline and budget have not been announced.
