CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two teenagers were arrested for bringing a handgun to their Southwest Side elementary school on Thursday morning.

Chicago Police were called to Finkl School at 2332 S. Western Ave. about 9:30 a.m. Thursday by school officials who said a student was found in possession of a gun, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

A 14-year-old girl was brought into the office after a another student saw her with a gun, which she turned over to school officials, he said. The girl told police she was holding the gun until after school for a 15-year-old boy, who was also a student at the school.

"CPS continues to make the safety and security of our students a priority and we do not tolerate weapons of any kind on school grounds," Chicago Public Schools spokesman Marielle Sainvilus said in a statement. "School officials took the appropriate steps of notifying the CPD, who then took immediate action at the school."

Both students were arrested, and the gun was recovered, Mirabelli said. He could not confirm a report that the gun was loaded.

They were charged as juveniles with unlawful use of a weapon. No one was injured in the incident.
