Tonight's talker is about a trend in women's shopping that's not about shoes, purses, or power-suits. It's a much, much racier trend inspired by the book "Fifty Shades of Grey," the smash-hit erotic novel that's been described as "mommy porn."
Hardware stores in New York City have been seeing unusually high numbers of women buying soft-fiber rope. And here in Chicago, sex-toy stores have suddenly had an influx of new customers. The owner of one told us it started in mid-April.
"We're seeing more of these orders coming that are women ordering and they're like a little pack of some light wrist restraints and a little whip," said Searah Deysach, who owns "Early to Bed" on Chicago's North Side.
She said she's owned the store for more than a decade, and for years, her typical customer has been in his or her 20s. Nowadays, business is booming with soccer moms, who are buying satiny blindfolds, "whisper cuffs," a soft whip called a "kinky crop."
"This book has given alot of women in particular permission -- because it's so popular," Deysach said. "People are reading it publicly. They think. 'Ok, maybe it's not the craziest thing in the world for me to walk into this sex toy store and ask for something that I've never had before and never tried before, and try something new."
And it's not just the small, specialty shops capitalizing on the trend. Have you seen some of the shelves at the drug store lately? Downtown at CVS, we counted five choices of "personal massagers, and across the street, Walgreens had 17 different kinds to choose from.
