A bank branch inside a southwest suburban Jewel store was robbed Thursday morning by a man who implied he had a gun.
About 9:18 a.m., the man walked up to the counter of the TCF Bank branch in the Jewel Food Store at 8801 S. Ridgeland Ave. in Oak Lawn and gave the teller a note demanding hand over money and implying he had a weapon, according to Oak Lawn police.
No weapon was displayed, but the clerk complied and the man fled, police said in a release. A person matching the description of the robber was seen east of the store getting into a burgundy-colored car described as an older style Chrysler.
The robber was described as a black man in his early 20s, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-9 with dreadlocks, wearing black sunglasses, dark grey jacket with white stripes on the arms, and blue jeans, the release said.
The FBI has taken over the investigation.
There have been at least 81 bank robberies in the Chicago area this year, according to the FBI. Last year there were 115.
