Gas prices in Chicago area drop in May

Posted: Updated:

Drivers usually expect some of the highest gasoline prices in the country in the Midwest, but according to the AAA Chicago Motor Club, prices in our part of the country have seen the largest week-over-week declines as compared to the rest of the country.

"This is quite a welcome change for an area that continually ranks among the highest prices in the country," AAA Chicago spokeswoman Beth Mosher said in a release.

AAA Chicago's most recent Fuel Gauge Report estimates that in Illinois, the average regular unleaded gasoline price decreased 18 cents during the past month to $3.91 in May. This is 28 cents lower than last year, marking the first time in 2012 that monthly gas price averages have been lower year-over-year, the release said.

  • As of Thursday morning, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded in the city of Chicago was $4.124, down from $4.380 a month ago, according to AAA.
  • In Cook County, regular unleaded averages $4.20, down 17 cents from last month and 24 cents lower than last year.
  • In DuPage County, regular unleaded gas averages $4.04, a 15-cent decrease from April and down 24 cents from last year.
  • In Will County, regular unleaded averages $4.00, 14 cents lower compared to last month and 23 cents lower than last year.
  • In northern Indiana, gas prices averaged $3.89 in May, down 16 cents from April 2012 and down 18 cents from May 2011, according to AAA.
  • The average price in Gary, Ind., as of Thursday, was $3.787, compared to $3.982 a month ago.
