New law to allow Chicago gang bosses to be charged for underling's crimes

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The city is pushing for a new law that will help fight gang violence in Chicago.

Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez and Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy unveiled details of the proposed law on Wednesday.

It's a racketeering law similar to the one used to bust up the Chicago Outfit.

The newly passed law gives prosecutors the ability to charge gang bosses for crimes committed by underlings.

Police estimate that 75 to 80 percent of the shootings and murders in the city are gang related.

The bill now goes to Governor Quinn for his signature.
