Ill. lawmakers cut funds for police torture panel

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Members of an Illinois commission established to review allegations of police torture say a decision by state lawmakers to stop funding the panel means 30 or 40 wrongly convicted men may never get a rehearing.

Executive Director David Thomas says the Illinois Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission was a last hope for most of the alleged victims of torture and their families.

Thomas says more than 100 claims of torture have been filed with the commission over just two years. But with its budget slashed to zero last week, he says the commission won't be able to do any additional work starting later this month.

Thomas says the amount of money in the commission's budget was a drop in the bucket given the type of civil rights violations involved.
