SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -
Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m., a black Monte Carlo pulled up to GM World Headquarters going the wrong way in the horseshoe driveway off Jefferson.
Sources in the Detroit Police Department tell us the 25-year-old man from Farmington made a 90 degree left turn tapping the glass on the revolving glass door. Security asked him to leave, saying he couldn't park there. He refused to move. They threatened to call police. The man then laid on the gas slamming into the glass revolving door and damaging the door frame and glass wall. He still refused to get out of the car, so security dragged him out and waited for police.
A General Motors spokesperson told us that there is a limit to how long people can stand in that area in their cars and they may be towed or ticketed.
A security expert told us that General Motors may decide to reevaluate how close people can get to the building.
"I think, like in any security situation, it's a process of bending and flexing to different threats, and I'm sure they're looking at this right now and making plans to make the thing safer there," explained Ned Timmons.
The security expert, whose next big gig will be helping beef up the Republican National Convention, says security at GM is considered to be tight and solid, but how close should someone be able to get to the entrance of such a prominent building -- a symbol of Detroit and corporate America? There's been too much precedent to simply turn a blind eye from this wake up call.
"Maybe they need to look at barricades there, they need to look at the perimeter security there more closely, and maybe it was a wake up call that will benefit us in the end," Timmons said.
Charges may be pending against the 25-year-old man, but for now he is not in police custody. He is in the hospital and undergoing a mental health evaluation.
