Cook County to send tax bills on time

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Cook County is poised to do something it hasn't done in more than 30 years: Mail its second installment property tax bills on time.

On Friday, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced the bills will be sent to residents on time, calling the failure to do so year after year "embarrassing."

As a result of the tax bills being sent late, they were paid late because taxpayers must be given a month from the time the county sent the bills to pay them.

Preckwinkle says that hurt school districts, library districts and park districts that rely on property taxes because the county lost millions of dollars over the years in interest that would have been earned had the bills been sent - and paid - on time.
