The CTA will announce an ambitious bus modernization program Friday.
The transit agency hopes to buy 425 new buses and rebuild more than 1,000 older ones. Officials promise that the remanufactured buses will be "like new."
The CTA plans to pay for the plan with bond money backed by Illinois sales taxes. The agency does not plan on using any state or federal funds.
The modernization plan will cost nearly $500 million.
The CTA said customers can look forward to a smoother and quieter ride, with more reliable heating and air conditioning, as well as a better chance of getting a seat on the bus during peak hours.
