Founded in 1898, The Geographic Society of Chicago (GSC) is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit educational organization incorporated in Illinois. Its interests, however, stretch beyond the Chicago and Illinois areas to geography-related issues of national and international scope as well. It is composed of members and supporters who are not only professional geographers and teachers but interested members of the public as well.
The mission of the GSC is to advance the art and science of geography; encourage the study of geography in the schools; recognize outstanding achievements in the field; provide leadership on geographic issues; and promote public understanding and appreciation of Earth's people and places.
The Geographic Society of Chicago is hiring for a full time Executive Director. Serving at the pleasure of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is the Chief Operating Officer for the Geographic Society of Chicago (GSC). He or she is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the organization, and implementing such policies as may be adopted by the Board of Directors.
Responsibilities include:
Developing and implementing a fundraising plan; writing grant applications; furnishing granting agencies with required progress reports; and establishing, subject to Board of Directors approval, policy related to GSC membership dues and benefits.
Overseeing the orderly growth of the GSC membership base. He or she provides management support to the GSC Board of Directors, preparing the agenda for and presiding over the Annual Membership Meeting, the annual Board of Directors Meeting, and such Regional Membership Meetings as he or she is able to attend. He or she is an officer of the GSC, and thus serves on the Board of Directors.
Oversees the development and maintenance of the GSC website; serves as Editor and Production Manager of the quarterly newsletter of the GSC; edits and maintains any GSC membership recruitment material; and is responsible for the preparation and production of all other GSC educational publications.
Serves as Director of Educational Programs for the GSC. He or she makes public presentations about the GSC goals and programs; prepares such curriculum material as GSC may publish and distribute; and conducts such workshops and colloquia for educators as his or her working budget and travel schedule may permit.
Serves as the official spokesperson for the GSC. He or she writes all Press Releases, Director's Letters, brochures and related public relations materials; represents GSC at all educational and public functions; and develops public relations policy for the GSC subject to Board of Directors approval.
The Executive Director may work from home, but Chicago area presence and attendance at events is mandatory.
