CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Roy Ferguson, the man who took people hostage inside a Valparaiso real estate office Friday, was hailed as a hero seven years ago.

The Times of Munster reports after he ran inside a burning Valparaiso house and rescued a man and his two children. Ferguson, 48, died at the end of the standoff at the financial office Friday.

His fiancée told the Times that she doesn't understand what happened.

She said he drove from Texas back to Indiana a few days ago to get an old house ready for new tenants.

She also said she knew one of the real estate employees owed him money - but that he didn't mention it when they talked the day before the hostage standoff.
