Bob Sirott's One More Thing about police superintendent Garry McCarthy

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One more thing about police superintendent Garry McCarthy.

His NATO work has earned him a lot of praise from the mayor, the public, and the rank and file in the department.

Most of the accolades center around the fact that McCarthy wasn't behind a desk at some command center. He was on the streets with his men and women.

But that wasn't his most impressive scene over the weekend. After all, cynics could say he did this to look good, that it was calculated---good PR for a guy from New York who has only been on the job here for a year. To me what was most revealing, telling of the real person behind the uniform, was this comment he made on Sunday.

"If you think it's easy to ask people to do what they did—it's not. Asking people to put themselves in harms way knowing they will be assaulted. These people were magnificent."

It was an unusual and impressive show of emotion; a genuine look into this man's heart and soul. There was no mistaking his true feelings about his troops, and about being a police officer. This is a top cop though and through. Garry McCarthy is the real deal.
