CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A South Side woman accused of murdering her 7-month-old daughter nearly three years ago pleaded guilty to a lesser charge Tuesday and was sentenced to four years in prison.
Vanessa Urbina, 25, pleaded guilty Tuesday to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to four years in prison, court officials said.
Urbina, of the 10600 block of South Avenue E, was charged in April 2010 with two counts of first-degree murder, officials said.
She was accused of killing her 7-month-old daughter, Isaly Navia. Police said the girl suffered blunt-force trauma to the head on July 24, 2009, and Urbina initially told police the child fell.
Navia was taken in critical condition to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, where she died three days later, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
An autopsy determined she died of injuries from blunt head trauma caused by child abuse, and the death was ruled a homicide.
