CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

An 8-year-old Carter Vo was killed in a three-car crash Monday in Skokie.

Police said a car driving south on Saint Louis Avenue tried to turn left on to Main Street and hit another vehicle at 4:24 Monday afternoon.

The driver lost control and hit the child, who was either on a bike or walking near the northeast corner of the intersection.

The same car went on to hit another vehicle in the northwest corner of the intersection, the release said. One other person was treated for superficial cuts after the crash.

The Vo family is devastated. Nhu Vo, Carter's father, said for a boy so young, he had an inquisitive mind.

He recently asked his father, "What is heaven like?"

Nhu Vo cannot understand why his son had to find out so soon.

A 23-year-old Skokie woman is in custody, though charges were still pending Tuesday morning, police said. There were no signs of alcohol or a medical condition contributing to the accident.

Carter was a Madison School second-grader. Principal Chelsey Maxwell and District 69 Superintendent Quintin Shepherd sent a letter to families Tuesday morning informing them of the tragedy.

Maxwell said the staff was "very close" to the student.

"He was a wonderful boy and our thoughts go out to his family," she said. "It's a hard time for our school."

A makeshift memorial was in place at the accident scene by Tuesday morning.

The administrators said a team of teachers and support staff were on hand to support students and parents "as we all deal with the loss of one of our children."

Maxwell said the district had already brought in social workers from all three of its schools for counseling as needed by the students.
