ATLANTA -

The afternoon and early evening showers turned severe for some portions of Metro Atlanta on Sunday.

Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued for Forsyth, Fulton, Clayton, and DeKalb counties by the National Weather Service. Several alerts for lightning, hail, and heavy rain were also issued.

Officials with DeKalb County tell FOX 5 News that the some streets became flooded during the warning for their county due to heavy rainfall in such a short time. The warning which was issued around 7 p.m. Sunday was canceled a half hour later as the storms settled down, but not before causing some damage.

The DeKalb County 911 Center reported to the National Weather Service that several trees came down shortly before the warning was issued in the area of Montreal Road. Officials say they were able to get the trees cleared from the roadways.

In Alpharetta, emergency crews worked to remove trees along Thompson Road near Little Stone Way. A few of the trees reportedly also fell on some houses in the same neighborhood.

Viewers reported to FOX 5 Storm Team that large hail came down at Atlanta's Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. FAA officials report that there were delays in and out of the airport due to the passing thunderstorms. They advise anyone expecting arrivals or expecting to depart tonight, should check with their respective airlines.

The FOX 5 Storm team was tracking the storms with VIPIR Radar as they moved through the area. Several viewers called in to confirm the hail the radar was indicating. Most hail ranged from pea to quarter size.

Several fire crews say they were busy early Sunday evening checking on calls of lightning strikes and alarm calls from the passing storm.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the storm.

FOX 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Jeff Hill says that more showers and thunderstorms will develop Monday and Tuesday. He says to expect them around the same time as the past two days, developing in the afternoon and early evening hours. Hail and lightning will be the major threat associated with these pop-up storms.
