NATO leaders to focus on war in Afghanistan, economic issues

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One by one, the leaders of NATO countries from all over the world flew into O'Hare Saturday.

Prime Minister Mario Monti of Italy, Julia Gillard of Australia and Victor Ponta of Romania were among the dignitaries that arrived Saturday, but none will be as closely watched as France's new president, Francois Hollande.

Hollande has promised to remove all 3,300 French troops from Afghanistan this year, sticking to a campaign promise that helped him unseat Nicolas Sarkozy earlier this week.

President Obama is still committed to the NATO coalition's timeline, which would remove all allied troops by the end of 2014.

But Hollande and Obama appeared to agree on many economic issues this weekend at the G8 conference, with both men favoring government spending to promote growth rather than budget cuts and austerity measures.

Those views clash strongly with those of German Prime Minister Angela Merkel, who has loudly called for austerity measures across the Eurozone, particularly in debt-stricken countries like Greece.
