Geovany Soto Placed On Disabled List, Wells Recalled

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed catcher Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list following a left knee arthroscopy (retroactive to May 17) and recalled right-handed pitcher Randy Wells from Triple-A Iowa.

Wells will wear uniform number 36 and is available for the Cubs tonight against the Chicago White Sox at Wrigley Field.

Soto had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee yesterday (performed by Dr. Stephen Gryzlo) after experiencing inflammation two days ago.  He is batting .161 (15-for-93) with three home runs and six RBI in 28 games this season.

Wells, 29, returns for his second stint with the Cubs this season after going 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA (6 ER/8.2 IP) in two starts during his first stint from April 22-May 3.  He is 2-2 with a 7.71 ERA (26 ER/30.1 IP) in six starts with Iowa this year.

The righthander is 27-31 with a 4.05 ERA (229 ER/509.0 IP) in 88 major league appearances, all but four as a starter.  Wells spent most of the last three seasons in the Cubs rotation, posting a 7-6 record with a 4.99 ERA (75 ER/135.1 IP) in 23 starts last year after missing nearly two months in April and May due to a right forearm strain.  Wells went 6-3 with a 4.04 ERA (40 ER/89.0 IP) in 14 starts after the All-Star Break.
