Police: Teen fatally shot by elderly grandmother in West Bloomfield

Posted: Updated:
WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

"The neighbors were calling saying they heard shots fired.  Our officers responded and when they got there they found a 17-year-old victim with gunshot wounds and a 74-year-old woman, who they took into custody," said West Bloomfield Police Lieutenant Tim Diamond.

A jaw dropping case of domestic violence.  Police say a 17-year-old boy was shot several times and murdered by his own grandmother.

"She is in custody, and she is at a local hospital at this time being checked out because of her age and the circumstances involved.  Once she's cleared from the hospital, she'll be brought to the station."

Police say the 74-year-old woman has to be medically cleared before questioning.  She lives in a West Bloomfield condominium complex with her 86-year-old husband.

Neighbors say the grandson moved in just six months ago, but police believe they had a volatile relationship.  They responded to another domestic call between the two back in March.

The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at Botsford Hospital.  He lived just long enough to make his own 911 call for help.

"He indicated to our dispatcher that he had been shot, and there was a conversation between the two of them until the paramedics arrived."

"He was a good person.  He was a great friend.  He was always there for me if I had any problems, but honestly like I'm shocked," a teen told us.

Police are still working this case.  We're told the family has yet to be notified.
