NAPERVILLE, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -
Two federally protected Canadian geese have been shot by someone with a crossbow this year near a west suburban park, and the second bird had to euthanized.
Naperville Animal Control received a call May 7 about a Canada goose found an arrow through its wing and body near Century Farm Park, according to Naperville police. Chicago Bird Collision Monitors were called for assistance, but had to euthanize the bird because of its injuries.
Earlier this year, on Feb. 23, animal control had received a similar report of a Canada goose shot with a crossbow arrow near Century Park, police said. The Chicago Bird group found the bird, treated it, and by the end of March it had been released.
Police said both geese were shot with similar short arrows, likely near Century Farm Park because the deceased goose would not have been able to fly after suffering its injuries.
Hunting or trapping any animal is prohibited in Naperville, and Canada geese are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Act of 1918, a release from police said.
Anyone who injuries a goose or damages its eggs or nest without a federal permit faces fines of $5,000 to $10,000.
Anyone with information about the incidents should call animal control at (630) 420-6178 or Crime Stoppers at (630) 420-6006.
