U.S. Coast Guard Stresses Ice Safety As Temperatures Fluctuate

Posted:

Cold water kills quickly!  That's the message from the Coast Guard as Southeast Michigan continues to ride a rollercoaster of temperatures this winter.

While temperatures drop and ice begins to form across the southern portions of the Great Lakes those that go out onto the ice are reminded to take the proper safety precautions.

Fluctuating temperatures across the region will cause ice that is already unpredictable and dangerous to become even more so.

Fox 2 Weather Authority Meteorologist Rich Luterman says Southeast Michigan and much of the Great Lakes can expect above average temperatures at least for the next two weeks.

The Coast Guard reminds everyone that although air temperatures may seem relatively warm, lake temperatures remain extremely cold.

Immersion into icy water quickly leads to hypothermia and possibly death within minutes.
