Police: Crossing guard hit by teen driver at Hartland High School

HARTLAND, Mich. (WJBK) -

The Livingston County Sheriff says this is exactly why he thinks some teenagers are just too young to drive.  Police say a 16-year-old hit a crossing guard in his own school parking lot.  He bent over to pick up something that he dropped in the car and didn't stop until he hit a tree.

"Hit the crossing guard or the security person and flipped her in the air and she landed on her head," said Livingston County Sheriff Bob Bezotte.

Police describe a gruesome scene, 52-year-old Susan Hazzard run over by a student driver.  She is in serious condition at the University of Michigan hospital.

"She was convulsing in and out of consciousness, throwing up, and that's traditionally what you see with a head injury," Bezotte explained.

Police tell us the 16-year-old Hartland sophomore was driving 30 miles over the speed limit, 45 in a 15, and when he hit the crossing guard he didn't stop.

"There was a passenger in the vehicle that actually grabbed the steering wheel after they had hit the lady and they went about 75 yards, hit another curb, through a driveway and into some tree lines before the car came to a stop."

A statement from the superintendent's office says "We are saddened by the accident that occurred at Hartland High School involving a student and employee.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the employee and her family."

Police say they found marijuana in the car, but won't say if the weed played a role in the accident.

"There's a lot of rumors going around that aren't true," said Gage Erickson.

Such as?  "He was like really high and stuff like that."

Erickson is a freshman at Hartland High School and the teen driver's friend.  He says this is an unfortunate case of distracted driving.

"When he went to grab his iPod and he reached for it and wasn't paying attention and then swerved over and hit her."

However, police are taking this seriously.  They have already requested the 16-year-old's license be suspended and the prosecutor is filing charges.
