Occupy Chicago rally calls for end to foreclosures, evictions

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Occupy Chicago is trying to draw attention to protests every day leading up to the summit, and they did so peacefully Wednesday.

Wednesday's rally began at Jackson and LaSalle in the city's financial district, to protest foreclosures.

They demanded the end of profit-oriented evictions and foreclosures. The group wants a one-year moratorium on evictions in Cook County, a request planned to make to Tom Dart directly.

Dart received the activists, and said he sympathized with many of the points they brought forward. He hopes to be able to address their concerns, since their conversation went so well.

Four people were arrested during the protest.

Danny Johnson, 31, of the 500 block of West Cermak Road, was charged with of a felony count of aggravated battery of a police officer and a misdemeanor count of obstructing traffic, according to a police statement.

Emma Lozano, 58, of the 2000 blk. of W. 22nd Pl.; and Jose Landaverde, 44, of the 3400 blk. of W. 26th St., were charged with one count of criminal Trespass to Land, a misdemeanor.

Jeffrey Troutman, 31, of the 2200 blk. of W. 19th St., was charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and obstruction of traffic by a non-motorist, which are both misdemeanors.

Twenty-three-year-old college student Gabriel Fisher says he'll participate in protests the rest of the week and believes many of the causes are connected. They include opposition to war and advocacy of immigrant rights.

The protests will culminate on Sunday, when thousands of people are expected for rallies and a march.

Delegations from about 60 countries, including 50 heads of state, are expected to attend the meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization on Sunday and Monday to discuss issues such as the war in Afghanistan and European missile defense.
