A 23-year-old man already facing five life sentences in prison was charged Tuesday with the 2005 murders of two young north suburban children, killings for which one of the victims' fathers spent five years in jail awaiting trial.
The Lake County State's Attorney's office charged Jorge Torrez with 18 counts of murder for the 2005 slayings of 8-year-old Laura Hobbs and 9-year-old Krystal Tobias, whose bodies were found with multiple stab wounds in a Zion forest preserve.
The girls went to play at the Beulah Park Forest Presever on May 9, 2009, which was Mother's Day. Their beaten and murdered bodies were found by Jerry Hobbs, Laura's father, who was subsequently charged with the murders and spent five years in prison before being freed in 2010 because of DNA evidence linking Torrez to the crimes.
Torrez is currently in prison at the Abingdon Detention Center in Virginia, where he is serving five consecutive life terms plus 168 years for rape, robbery and abduction in an unrelated case, the release said. He is also facing a federal murder charge, for which he is scheduled to stand trial in February 2013.
