10th District Unity Party formed to run against Rep. Derrick Smith

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago Democratic leaders are forming a new political party, in an effort to push another Democrat out of office.

The target is State Representative Derrick Smith, who has been indicted on bribery charges. Smith won the Democratic primary this spring.

Party leaders want him to resign his seat - but Smith has refused. Democrats also don't want Republicans to gain his seat in Springfield.

They're forming the 10th District Unity Party to run against Smith in November. The new party has a meeting next week to pick a candidate.
