Chat Room: Two shocking covers from Time and Newsweek - Why so controversial?

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Monday's Chat Room, consultant Rochelle Trotter and Michigan Avenue magazine editor Susanna Negovan discuss the shocking magazine covers of Time Magazine and Newsweek.

First up, Newsweek's cover featuring a photo of President Barack Obama with a rainbow halo overhead, being touted as America's First Gay President.

Rochelle thinks this is just a political move on his part, as he claims to be a staunch Christian and if so, then the idea of Gay Marriage goes against his beliefs. She thinks this is just a ploy to get minds off of the economy and onto something else.

Susanna disagreed, stating that this was a very brave move on the part of the President, as gay marriage is the civil rights topic of our time and the President did a very smart thing by evolving his opinion - as this resonates with the group of voters he really needs to touch.

Rochelle stated the President is clearly sifting through what parts of the bible he wants to believe - and that she bets if his daughters wanted to marry a person of the same sex he wouldn't support it because the God in the King James Version of the bible does not support it. Susanna disagreed, stating that the God she serves is a God of love.

More back and forth heated discussion occurred around this cover as Anna stated "this truly is a polarizing topic."

Next up the Time magazine cover featuring the mother breastfeeding her 3-year-old son. When should a woman stop breastfeeding?

Susanna thinks that a woman and the topic of motherhood is always under fire. No one has the exact answer, and while she understands the theory behind the "attachment parenting" which Time writes about, we will have to wait and see how this young man ends up 20 years from now.

Rochelle agreed, stating that it really is a personal decision on a case by case basis, stating that even UNICEF and World Health Organization support breastfeeding up to two years old, and in some cases beyond.
