HAMMOND, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man had to be airlifted from the scene of a crash in northwest Indiana early Monday after he clipped a stopped Indiana State Police squad car and crashed into a semi.

An Indiana State Police trooper was investigating a crash involving a semi and a pickup truck on Interstate 80/94 near Calumet Avenue about 3:15 a.m. when another car clipped his squad car and crashed into the semi, Indiana State Police Sgt. Dwayne Dillahunty said.

That man had to be airlifted from the scene, and both directions of traffic were closed until 4:30 a.m., Dillahunty said. As of about 4:45 a.m. all westbound lanes and one eastbound lane have been reopened.

The semi driver was "checked out" at the scene, but no one else was hospitalized, Dillahunty said.
