Police arrested a 22-year-old man in the brutal beating of an elderly woman in Oconee County.
Judith Gilvey, 73, told police that she was assaulted in her home around 11 p.m. on Thursday and beat with a blunt object in her bed, according to Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry.
"She actually awoke to the feeling of pain on her head. She went to the bathroom, saw injuries to her face and dialed 911 on her phone," said Berry.
Police arrested Jacob Wagner near the Clarke County line on Friday after a manhunt. Authorities said they saw blood on the outside of Wagner's car and noticed bloody clothing in the window.
Officials said the Wagner had been a handyman at Gilvey's house for the last three months and that they had a dispute over money on Wednesday.
Wagner faces a charge of aggravated battery. Police said other charges are pending. He is being held without bond at the Oconee County Jail. Police believe that he acted alone.
Gilvey was transported to the Athens Regional Medical Center. She underwent surgery for injuries on face and head. She was in intensive care on Friday afternoon.
