Rocks hit six cars on Chicago Skyway, trigger manhunt

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago police are looking for the people who threw rocks at cars on the skyway Wednesday night.

Six cars were hit in the inbound lanes, between 99th and 105th street. Police first responded about 9 p.m. to a call of shots fired, according to Chicago Police News Affairs officer Daniel O'Brien.

The vehicles were hit with projectiles that damaged hoods and windshields, but did not penetrate the vehicles, Calumet Area police said.

Police at first thought that it was a gunman firing at cars, but didn't find any bullet casings, and no one was shot.

A K-9 unit and SWAT teams later found a group of rocks lined up along railroad property abutting the highway, leading authorities to now believe rocks, not bullets, hit the cars.

Police searched for the gunman using K-9 units on the ground and a chopper in the air. The incident sparked a manhunt that closed the entire Skyway from the Dan Ryan to the Indiana border.

The roadway was reopened about 11 p.m.

No one was seriously hurt, but at least one woman was cut by flying glass.

Seven vehicles in total were damaged, possibly from rocks, said police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer, who confirmed police found no evidence bullets were used.

The Chicago skyway is back to normal this morning, after it was shut down for two hours late Wednesday night. The skyway was closed in both directions between the Indiana border and 88th street.

Police are still searching for the people who damaged the vehicles, but do not know how many were involved.

Area South detectives are investigating.
