A man wearing a wig and a floral dress was arrested after attempting to rob a west suburban bank by claiming to have a bomb on Monday.
Donald R. Sherman, 53, of Bellwood entered the MB Financial branch at 1500 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Broadview and claimed to have a bomb strapped to his chest, according to the FBI. Sherman demanded $70,000, first a bank manager and then a teller, though he was not given any money.
The bank manager called police while Sherman was still inside the bank, the FBI said.
He was apprehended by Bridgeview police after leaving the bank, according to a criminal complaint. During a pat down, police removed two blue balloons from Sherman's chest.
In addition to the dress and wig, he was wearing a baseball cap with "Obama" printed on the front. The "bomb" was determined to be a hoax.
He was then turned over to the FBI.
Sherman was charged in a criminal complaint Tuesday with one count of attempted bank robbery. He appeared in U.S. District Court in Chicago and was ordered held until his next court appearance.
