WHEATON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A west suburban man was sentenced to 20 years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to robbing a taxi driver at knife point last year in Addison.
Curtis Johnson, 29, of Maywood pleaded guilty to one Class X felony count of armed robbery and Judge John Kinsella sentenced him to 20 years, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.
On December 5, 2011, just after 5 p.m., Johnson was a passenger in a taxi being driven by Miriano Miranda. in Addison. At some point, he pulled a knife on Miranda and demanded money, receiving about $100 before getting out of the cab and running away, a release from prosecutors said. Addison police charged Johnson on Jan. 21.
"Driving a taxi can at times be a difficult and dangerous job, as we have seen in this case," State's Atty. Robert Berlin said in a statement. "Today's sentence sends a message to those who would consider victimizing what they may see as an easy target ..."
By law, Johnson must serve 50 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
