Special Olympics begin with opening ceremony at Soldier Field

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's a very special day for thousands of athletes across Chicago. The Special Olympics begin Tuesday.

This is the 44th year for these games, which actually began in Chicago and has spread to every state, and more than 100 countries throughout the world.

Illinois Supreme Court Justice Ann Burke helped organize the first Special Olympics and on Tuesday, she said it only gets better each year.

Tuesday's opening ceremonies are taking place at Soldier Field. The games run from today to Thursday.
