CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Testimony in the William Balfour trial could wrap up as soon as Wednesday, but on Monday, a detective testified about what Balfour said on the night he was arrested for the Hudson family murders.

Retired Chicago police detective Thomas Kelly says he spent hours with William Balfour on October 24 2008.

That's when the Oscar-winning actress and singer's mother, brother and 7-year old nephew Julian King were killed in the family's Englewood home.

Kelly says they interviewed Balfour in room 8 at the police station at 51st and Wentworth about 10:30 that night, the videotape with full sound was played in court.

Balfour asked "why am I here?" Detective Kelly said: "your mother-in-law and brother-in-law have been murdered."

After fidgeting around and complaining about being cold, Balfour is heard on tape saying, "they trying to protect their sister's name. In all actually, her brother has a lot of enemies. He sold drugs, that's why I got out of that house. It was a hit".

On the tape, Balfour said he was no where near 70th and Yale on the day of the murders. He told police his car broke down and he left it near Robeson High School, and used his CTA bus pass to spend the day with his girlfriend over on the Westside. Balfour says he got there about 8:30 that morning.

Detectives are seen leaving the interview room and when they come back Kelly tells Balfour: "we have a problem amigo. You didn't use your bus card today and haven't used it since October 22nd."

CTA's chief of investigations was on the stand Monday as well, he told jurors the magnetic strip on CTA passes records date, time and location.

That chief's testimony put more holes in what the courtroom heard on the tape. And while Balfour "said" he was on the west side early that morning, prosecutors said phone records tell another story.

Balfour called his girlfriend three or four times but didn't arrive until 11:30 am. Julian King's body was found three days later, in the white SUV just blocks away from that girlfriend's house. The gun prosecutors say was used to commit the murders was found in a nearby field.
