On a day for families to mourn the loss of a loved one, police surround the Kenny Brothers Funeral home in Evergreen Park. The reason for such a strong presence: the funeral is for a suspected gang member.
That concern spread to precaution as police asked the Evergreen Park School District to ask parents to pick up their children for the next two days. Many walk right by the funeral home.
That will be the case for the Kane family who has four kids at Most Holy Redeemer.
"It is a concern, my kids walk right by there from school, but it was good to know that we were being made aware of it," mother Angie Kane sad.
An email went out to parents whose students attend the surrounding schools. According to the Evergreen Park School district superintendent, the district is even planning on holding recess inside tomorrow because of the funeral.
"Every time we turn the news on at night we see another innocent killing of an innocent child or sometimes adult, not meant for that child or not meant for that person. And we want to make sure that we are protecting our kids," Superintendent Diane Cody said.
This is something most neighbors say they're not used to dealing with near the elementary and junior high schools.
"It's a very safe neighborhood. We don't have to deal a lot of with a lot of gangs and stuff, right in this immediate ara. So, it's a little shocking," one neighbor said.
Heavy police presence along with the Chicago Gang Crimes Unit seemed to deter any activity today. Despite that, Evergreen Park School District is sticking to the police recommended plan.
"It is unfortunate, who would think that we would need to do this? But, I'd rather err on the side of caution than not," Cody said.
Police are investigating the murder of a homeless man who was beaten to death in an alley in Logan Square.
