Illinois encourages 'staycations' as summer airfares skyrocket

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The state of Illinois is launching a new "staycation" campaign to convince people to stay in the state this summer.

Visits to historic sites like Abraham Lincoln's home and other tourists spots is up 20 percent so far this year.

The state is launching hometown travelers campaign as a way to convince people that staying in Illinois this summer is a great way to avoid the sky high price of flying or driving to far-off destinations.

Summer vacations this year are going more expensive - a lot more expensive.

Experts said that air fares are going up between six and 10 percent across the country. But flights into and out of Chicago have gone up even more.

A non-stop flight from Chicago to San Francisco cost $318 last year, and it's up to $510 this year.

Luckily, cruise prices aren't getting much more expensive, as long as you can afford to fly to the port.
