Hobart man arrested for threatening the President

A series of threatening, expletive-filled and confusing voice mail messages led to a northwest Indiana man being charged earlier this week with retaliating against a federal official by threat and threatening the president of the United States.

The U.S. Attorney's office in Hammond announced the charges earlier this week against Jimmie Ray, 32, of Hobart, Ind., but the probable cause affidavit was not made available until Friday.

Ray, who was arrested on April 27, has been ordered to be held and evaluated to see whether he is competent to take part in his defense.

His attorney, Steve Scheele, said he filed a notice of an insanity defense Friday. "That notice speaks for itself," he said.

Ray is in custody now.

According to the affidavit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Hammond, Ray left six messages at the FBI office in Merrillville, starting on April 25.

Ray, who ran for Hobart mayor in 2007, at first claims he had to end a call with police because of problems with an FBI agent being distracted and not knowing what to say, although it is unclear what he is referring to.

In another message, he makes a reference to a British specialist who destroyed the government.

A third message contains almost all expletives, cursing a woman and threatening to punch her "95 times myself" if she tries to contact him again. In the fourth message, he mentions a plea deal and complains about a check not being brought to it.

"I'm gonna go in there, gas your (expletive) office with the Hobart Police Department and kill every one of you," he says according to the transcript of the message. "There are 70 field agents at that office. I, we could kill you before you (expletive) 5 in the morning."

Transcriptions for the last two messages were not provided, but the affidavit says that he threatened to blow up the White House if they tried to touch him.

"If I ever see (blacked out) again, I'm gonna kill him," he also says in the transcript. "That's what gonna happen to (blacked out) because I know that he's a spy."

The affidavit says that these are not the first messages he's left with the FBI.
