HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A fire Friday night at a home in northwest suburban Hoffman Estates caused $400,000 in damage and resulted in the deaths of two dogs.
Fire officials say the home at 970 Basswood in Hoffman Estates was, with the exception of the two dogs, unoccupied at the time of the fire. The Hoffman Estates Fire Department got the first report of the fire at 9:03 p.m., a release said.
When the first companies arrived at the scene, they found smoke and fire showing from the one-story ranch home. A search of the home found that it was unoccupied, except for two dogs that did not survive, the release said. The main body of the fire was brought under control quickly but extensive overhaul was necessary because of the amount of damage within the home.
The initial loss estimate to the structure and contents was $400,000, the release said. The home was found to have smoke detectors but it was unclear if they were working at the time of the fire. The home was not equipped with a sprinkler system.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Saturday morning.
The fire department's response brought 22 firefighters to the scene, as well as the fire chief, assistant fire chief, and a fire inspector. The Schaumburg and Palatine fire departments responded to the scene to provide a Rapid Intervention Team and assist with fire control. Four other suburban departments assisted by providing fire station coverage to Hoffman Estates while companies were working at the fire.
