The New York-style L cars pulled from service months ago amid safety concerns will be back on the CTA's Pink Line beginning Sunday.
The transit agency will re-introduce two, six-car 5000 Series trains on Sunday, and an additional six-car train will be added each week, the CTA said.
Seventy of the cars have been delivered to Chicago.
The CTA pulled 40 of the Bombardier-manufactured railcars out of service in December after inspectors on a New York assembly line found a small number of "manufacturing-quality issues" with a wheel bearing part used to build the cars. Bombardier refitted those cars with new parts, then began shipping the cars to Chicago, the CTA said.
The cars made their debut in Chicago in April 2010. They have seven security cameras, a recorder system similar to a black box on an airplane, and sensitive door sensors that will detect obstructions better, the agency said. The most noticeable change is a new aisle-facing seating configuration, which the agency says should accommodate more customers per car and allow more room for riders carrying backpacks, luggage, strollers or bikes.
