A Mega Millions game player who bought their ticket for Friday night's drawing at a south suburban gas station is $118 million richer Saturday morning.
The winning ticket, the only one in the multi-state lottery's Friday drawing that matched all five numbers and the Mega Ball number, was sold at the Glenwood Minuteman Citgo, 18659 S. Halsted St., according to the Illinois Lottery.
The winning numbers in Friday night's drawing were: 04 - 11 - 21 - 42 and 53 and the Mega Ball number was 38.
In addition to that big winner, two Illinois players matched the first five numbers without the Mega Ball, for a $250,000 prize. One of those tickets was sold at a store in Rockford and the other at a Circle K at 13059 S. LaGrange Rd. in Palos Park.
The Mega Millions jackpot is back to $12 million for the next drawing, on Tuesday.
While no one knows who purchased the winning ticket, what is known is the identity of the owner of the gas station in suburban Glenwood where the ticket was purchased.
Sebastian John, 56-year-old immigrant from India, stands to rake in $500,000 — the maximum commission allowable — for selling the winning ticket.
Unlike many big commission payouts, which go to offices of corporate chains, John will cash a check for himself and two partners.
He also plans to share some of the windfall with his employees who work at his gas station and convenience store, Glenwood Minuteman Citgo, 18659 S. Halsted St.
John said the money will come in handy because other than lottery sales, times have been tough.
Though he sells $300,000 worth of lottery tickets a month, his gas station on the southern edge of Cook County is challenged by lower taxes across the border.
"We have big competition from Will County and Indiana because they can sell gas and cigarettes cheaper. We were facing a lot of troubles but this bonus will give me a break," John said.
Though John has sold a lot of tickets with smaller payouts, this is his first big one in 11 years of running his business.
He is looking forward to finding out who the big winner is.
"We know almost every customer here, this is a neighborhood store."
