CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
FIRST ON FOX: It's a new school building on the south side with the same old problems. Over the past two weeks at South Shore International Academy, nearly three dozen students have been suspended for fighting, and a number of them were girls.
From the gym, to the lunchroom, even the main office. That's where three or four girl fights broke out Wednesday afternoon, just after lunch.
One of the girls allegedly had a plastic gold ring with a sharp object on it and poked another girl in the eye. That ring wasn't picked up by the metal detector that each student has to walk through to enter the new building.
A source who work inside the school tells FOX Chicago that administrators are staying away from calling what happened yesterday "gang related" because it was girls. Instead, they're called "cliques."
The source adds that whenever a large group of teenage boys get into a fight they're suspended, if not expelled, for "gang fighting".
Nearly a dozen girls have all been suspended for 10 days, and Chicago police escorted them away in handcuffs. Our source says some of the girls here fight all the time; five against one, or three on three.
Students say four staff members, including the assistant principal, were injured while trying to break up Wednesday's fight. To keep things calm Thursday while the safe passage people were out, CPS' head of security sent out their climate team.
