A man was seriously injured when he was struck by a semi truck on I-55 while standing outside his car on the highway Thursday morning.
At about 11:43 a.m., the semi was southbound on I-55 at Milepost 256 near Plainfield, a release from Illinois State Police said. The man was standing outside his vehicle, which was partially in the right lane of traffic when the truck, also in the right lane, struck him, police said.
It was not yet known why the man was standing in the roadway.
Plainfield Fire Department personnel transported him to St. Joseph's Hospital in Joliet, where he remained in serious condition with life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Charges against the semi driver were pending Thursday afternoon.
