I'm happy to report that two of the big movies opening this weekend are not only well worth the price of admission, they really are terrific.
Beginning with the much-anticipated "The Avengers" the live-action Marvel Comics super-adventure, with those iconic super-heroes -- Iron Man, the Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow -- all teaming up to save the world from an alien force intent on world destruction.
This is everything a big, popcorn super-hero adventure film should be. There's non-stop action, great special effects, plus a wonderful script. Robert Downey, Jr. again is spot-on as Iron Man, delivering great zingers that give "The Avengers" some truly hilarious moments. The whole cast is great, but I especially loved how Mark Ruffalo gives us the best-ever Bruce Banner/Hulk we've ever seen.
Also excellent but completely different is "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," a charming and intelligent film about a group of elderly folks from Britain, all facing financial challenges for a variety of reasons. Independently, they learn about the Marigold Hotel in Jaipur, India, and think they will find an elegant, but reasonably-priced retirement hotel where they'll spend their final years. Of course, what they discover upon arrival is something far different, and the story takes off from there with many surprising twists and turns.
Led by an all-star cast -- including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy and Dev Patel -- this is an Oscar-quality must see. Though clearly aimed at an older audience, I hope people of all ages see it, as it's really outstanding entertainment, but with a good message.
