Ask Dr. Mona: HPV Vaccine Safety

A recent Republican presidential debate took a detour into a medical debate when the candidates delved into the safety of the HPV vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control said HPV vaccines prevent serious health problems, such as cervical cancer and other, less common cancers, which are caused by HPV (human papillomavirus). In addition to cancer, HPV can also cause other health problems, such as genital warts.

The federal government recommends that boys and girls get the vaccine before they hit puberty.

But Rep. Michele Bachmann argues that the vaccine is dangerous and could cause serious health problems including mental retardation.
