A 6-year-old Chicago boy met the firefighter who saved his life more than a year ago Monday.
Deonte Ashford was badly burned in house fire in March of 2011. He was unconscious when pulled from a burning basement, but he was out just in time to save his life.
Firefighter Tom O'Connell found him, and said he remembers it like it was just yesterday.
The smoke was so thick he couldn't see, and the fire was so hot it burned his hands through the gloves.
While Deonte will wear the scars of that day the rest of his life, his mom said his attitude is good, and he is the same sweet little boy he's always been.
That sweet boy got a new bike Monday from his heroes, when they met at Goodlow Magnet School.
Tom says normally he doesn't do this kind of thing. He usually distances himself from each fire and treats every day like a new day, in order to keep fighting those fires.
But Deonte and his mom were thankful this time he and his fellow firefighters did.
It was Deonte's idea to meet tom and his fellow firefighters. His teacher is the one who brought them altogether.
