Catholic school employee fired for using IVF to have a baby: Chat

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Today's Chat Room with Susanna Negovan, Rochelle Trotter and Anna Davlantes the ladies talk IVF and the Catholic Church.

Emily Herx, who taught English, had one child already but found she could get pregnant naturally again. So she and her husband decided to try in-vitro- fertilization.

She said at the time that school leaders told her they were "praying for her," which she took to mean that they approved. But she was fired.

The Indiana teacher is suing for discrimination, claiming she was dismissed for undergoing in-vitro-fertilization, which the Catholic church opposes, to try to get pregnant. Did the school act appropriately in their decision?

Susanna thinks not! The decision for any woman to have IVF is a personal choice, and this teacher has every right to decide what she wants to do with her body. The fact that she was "open" about her treatment showed that clearly she didn't know she was doing anything against school doctrine. Additionally she is NOT in charge of teaching anything related to religion so why should she be penalized for her personal decisions?

Rochelle agreed, stating that although she understands the "why" behind their decision it is not fully biblically based. She challenged the system to show where the bible states that IVF is wrong. Additionally she thinks the Catholic church needs to focus more on the larger issues it faces namely priests who exhibit gross misconduct. Why single out this woman, and IVF? Does this mean that anyone who has had a divorce, is homosexual or has had an abortion - all of which are "no no" in the Catholic system - should be fired from their positions in Catholic schools? Where do we draw the line. If it's not fully biblically based then it is not fair.

Anna challenged should there be some sort of "don't ask don't tell" policy for potential employees of Catholic schools? Susanna thinks a moral code could be adopted if they are so concerned about a teacher's personal life. Rochelle thinks it's none of their business...as long as the teacher is doing his/her job then that's what should be judged.
